The Worst Sports Team of All Time

Nate Tharp, Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 6:05 AM Comments (0)

Yep, it’s time for a little straight-talk on the New York Knickerbockers. Last Spring Jeff Coplon wrote a piece for New York Magazine where he called the Knicks Absolutely, Positively the Worst Team in the History of Professional Sports. I wasn’t convinced at first glance. What about the 0-14 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers and their heinous orange uniforms? That’s gotta count for something right? I later realized that Coplon was dead on. Being a terrible team isn’t just about Ws & Ls. It’s also about value. And the Knicks have a Dollar Tree team on a Harrods budget.

When team owners gamble, lie and cheat

Nate Tharp, Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 7:22 AM Comments (0)

Biggest sports scandals in American history. The 1919 Black Sox with Shoeless Joe and Buck Weaver. Roy Jones Jr. robbed in 1988 of a gold medal in Seoul Olympics. Pete Rose betting on baseball. Jim Thorpe being stripped of his gold medals. And the point-shaving and game fixing scandals that have spotted the history of college sports. All of these incidents share the common thread of a single or few, rogue individuals putting their interests above the integrity and fairness of sports. But none of these can quite reach the level of corruption that a Taiwanese baseball league has been plagued by.

What Really Happened in the LSU vs South Carolina Football game

Ryan Doyle, Monday, October 20, 2008 at 8:45 PM Comments (1)

On October 18th, 2008 LSU played South Carolina in a battle of SEC foes.  LSU came a way the victor, 24-17 in a closely fought battle.  LSU won a game that was closer than some expected.  The bigger news however, happened during the game. You can see it here -LSU vs USC Ref hit .  Officially, the SEC and even South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier, upon reviewing the film, have acknowledged that the hit by Referee Wilbur Hackett Jr. was not intentional and he was doing his job when QB Stephen Garcia cut back, Hackett had no where to go, and was protecting himself.

The Larry Bird Fantasy Basketball League

Nate Tharp, Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 2:28 PM Comments (1)

In the latest edition of ESPN The Magazine, a great Boston sports hero wrote about a specialized fantasy basketball league that pays homage to an even greater Boston sports hero.

After being struck by the simplicity and elegance of a league focused on Points, Rebounds and Assists, I decided to run the numbers to see if it would be filled with the usual suspects, or if there would be some surprises.

Third Time’s a Charm…maybe

Brad Richards, Friday, October 17, 2008 at 11:21 PM Comments (1)

Let me first state the obvious. In the past 25 years there has not been a single major professional sports championship celebrated in the city of brotherly love. However, if you believe the Philadelphia Soul – winner of ArenaBowl XXII – broke that streak this past July I ask you to stop reading now. Jump on the same train that Bon Jovi and Ron Jaworski are riding. Take that train and ride it as far as it’ll take you. Ride it away from Philly and away from me, because if that victory quenches your thirst for a real championship I don’t want you rooting for my team in this most recent edition of the fall classic.

Tour de Ryan

Ryan Doyle, Sunday, October 10, 2004 at 9:07 AM Comments (0)

Well, I have been away from the Hut for a while, but it was a worthwhile trip. This summer I went on a tour way more successful then any trip Lance Armstrong took in France. I made my way through a baseball game in the Windy city, a bachelor party trip to the City of Sin, a trip north of the border to see hopefully my new local baseball team, and finally a trip to South Kakalacki to relax on the beach and see the DogFather.

Why I Suck at Life

Ryan Doyle, Friday, October 8, 2004 at 9:10 AM Comments (0)

Editor’s Note: This story was originally posted on the previous iteration of The Drubbing, 3SportsGods.

So after I finished eating my dinner and I was cleaning up, I went to put away my hamburger helper when Bam! It hit me. The helper; all over the floor, all over the inside of the refrigerator, all over the walls and all over me. No I am not talking about the Helper hitting me, I am talking about an euphony…I suck at life. Its true and I am going to show you why. All of a sudden today I cannot lift my throwing arm because my shoulder felt like someone ran a Mac 10 over it (this is probably from sleeping on my side) and on the ride home on the metro my neck stiffened up from reading a book. Now the kicker, I am currently hitting .460 and slugging .680 in my wooden bat baseball league (side note: you know you are doing well when you are the thinnest guy on the team yet you bat cleanup) and I have 4 games in 3 days coming up. However, I cannot move my neck to see the ball or lift my arm to throw!

Team USA vs. Argentina II

Rodney Griffith, Friday, August 27, 2004 at 9:13 AM Comments (3)

This is the one that we have all been waiting for, the rematch, Argentina v. Team USA. We remember what happened in Indianapolis. What will happen here today in Athens could change history as we get it started live on NBC, unfortunately not commercial free, but at least we still get Lamps! I’m excited today, looking for Team USA to annihilate the Argentineans. Oh wait, this team doesn’t annihilate anyone. The Argentineans are loaded, Manu Ginobili, John Chaney’s favorite one guard Pepe Sanchez, Carlos Delfino who will soon be joining the World Champion Pistons, and a cast of other characters. We are about to see how good LB really is. Secretly, I’m hoping the Spain coach comes out and attempts to sabotage the game somehow, I don’t know exactly what I want but we need a Tonya Harding-esque controversy.

Team USA vs. Spain

Rodney Griffith, Thursday, August 26, 2004 at 9:15 AM Comments (0)

Its time to get it started again commercial free by Hummer on the USA network, at 7:30 am EST here stateside. Should be a good one this morning, if by good I really mean potential blowout.

Spain was undefeated in Pool Play (5-0). Spain has won 12 consecutive International Games and are regarded as the best defensive international team, which bodes really well for our chances with the marksmanship of our outside shooters. Sages just said that Larry got the team to watch “Miracle”…since when does the Dream Team need a miracle. And why does every US team at the Olympics have to watch “Miracle”? It’s a great movie no doubt, great story obviously. I loved it, my top sports movie of all time, but I’m sick of hearing about every team watching it. Phelps and his 4×200 Free Relay Team before they beat the Australians, the Women’s Gymnastics Team, The Nightmare, and on and on and on. At least Misty May and Kerri Walsh didn’t feel the need to watch it because they knew they were going to win. It’s getting to be ridiculous. I’m as American as the next guy and as stated, love the movie, but if I hear about it one more time, I might start pulling for the Russians to win the Medal Count.

Taxi Cab Confessions

Ryan Doyle, Saturday, July 17, 2004 at 5:39 PM Comments (2)

Well, well my Pats won the Super Bowl…now I could write pages upon pages stating that ‘I told you so’, or brag about the victory in endless paragraphs. But I will spare you all my jubilee and celebration and instead I wanted to share with you some experiences I have had living near the city.

The best way to travel in any city is a taxi cab, I am convinced of this. Not only do you not have the responsibility of finding a safe parking space, but you also do not need to choose a DD, so everyone can have fun (not that you can’t have fun without drinking, but well you can’t if you’re the only sober one). You also get the adventure of riding with a cab driver. Now most rides are fairly mild and straight business, but on occasion you get a cabbie with a personality, mix this with a non sober group of riders and well, you get some interesting cab rides.
