Basketball JesusFor the first edition of the Larry Bird Fantasy Basketball League, Basketball Jesus Rankings in the new year, 2009, we have… well… nothing new. We start the year off with a whole lot of everything we’ve seen before. LeBron, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh at the top. Kevin Durant hanging on at the bottom. And Joe Johnson just keepin on somewhere in the middle.

Harvey Dent in a Cowboys uni?

It didn’t take long for a few of the Dallas Cowboys to show their true colors. Following the 44-6 beat-down given by the Philadelphia Eagles last weekend, the Cowboys were left licking their wounds and facing many tough questions.

What makes a good NFL Headcoach?

Shanahan fired

Shanahan fired

Hiring a  Coordinator to be a Head Coach has a lot more to do with the type of leader and team strategist than their play-calling and strengths on prior teams.  Look at the following head coaches and what their specialties were known for:

Brian Bellick – offensive “guru”  Was the Minnesota Viking’s Offensive Coordinator during their record setting season.  As a head coach in Baltimore, their defense seemed to score more offensive points than their offense.

Tony Dungy – Defensive “mastermind” – Tony was the Defensive Coordinator for the Vikings when they had top defense in the NFL in 1992.  As a head coach, the Colts have a prolific offense, and I can run through/over them on defense.

Bill Belichick – Defensive “genius” – During his days with the Giants, Bill was the defensive coordinator on a SB winning team that shut down the Bills.  Now as a head coach he had the highest scoring team of all time in 2008 and puts on the field a defense that looks like members of the AARP.

The Basketball Jesus Rankings: Week 9

, Monday, December 29, 2008 at 4:22 AM Comments (0)

Basketball JesusWhat a difference a month makes. Back in Week 5 Amare Stoudemire was off to a good start to the season and sitting pretty collecting healthy point and rebound totals in every game, earning him the fifth spot in our rankings. Then things started to turn. He dropped to sixth in week 6. Then to ninth in Week 7. He bounced back to the seventh spot in Week 8. And in Week 9 he has found himself tetering on the edge, dropping all the way to the 14th spot. And he’s still averaging 21.6 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. But it looks like he’s gonna need those 25 points a game he was putting up last year if he’s gonna stay relevant in any Larry Bird Fantasy Basketball League.

Shaun Ellis’ $10,000 snowball

, Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 10:48 PM Comments (0)

I don’t know if December 21st was officially the day that fun died in the NFL, but it was certainly the day the league got another reason for fans, writers and players to refer to it as the No Fun League. And no one has to pay more than Shaun Ellis.

The Basketball Jesus Rankings: Week 8

Basketball Jesus

Holy Half-Man Half-Amazing, we have a Vince Carter sighting. Coming in at the #13 spot, the aging wonder has eeked his way onto the list. Only one of two Nets we might possibly see in the rankings this year. The other being Devin Harris who has been scoring like a mad man and raking in the assists as well. But he’s got a ways to go since he lost so much time with his early-season injury. LeBron has managed to hold onto the top spot, but it may not last for long as D-Wade is a measly 38 points behind.

The Quietest 52 points in NBA History

NBA All Star game

NBA All Star game

From his days at University of Washington, battling in the Pac-10 with another NBA bound player Nate Robinson, you could always tell Brandon Roy was one of the better players on the court.  He played all 4 years at Washington, and caught my eye as being steady, a clutch shooter and a fun player to root for.  I continued watching him in the NBA, and was surprised this 4 year NCAA player, sure-thing All-Star dropped to the #6 spot, behind Sheldon Williams, Adam “Cry me a River” Morrison, and Ty Thomas.  So you skip a proven player for an undersized Forward who cannot shoot, a porn stach’ed player who cried before the game finished, and an uber-athletic forward who cannot drive, dribble or shoot?

Give Scott Skiles a team, other than Milwaukee Bucks

, Friday, December 19, 2008 at 3:04 PM Comments (0)

Scott Skiles coachingWhen will John Hammond wake up and realize, Jerry Reinsdorf was right, I’ve got to can Scott Skiles? Skiles is single-handedly ruining the bucks. I know Mo Williams was a big loss, and no team with Malik Allen on the roster has ever been successful, but the Bucks have still got a decent team. Why does Scott Skiles insist on burying this team so early in the season? He’s managed to make an okay roster bad and I’m worried that if he continues down this path he’ll have turned the Milwaukee Bucks into the Tampa Bay Bucs we all remember, back when they were sporting the bright orange unies.

Cleveland Browns: A few things to think about before you fire Romeo Crennel

, Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at 12:59 PM Comments (3)

Smiling Romeo CrennelIs it really his fault? Can you really blame Romeo for not winning more games with this roster? I’m sure there are plenty of Browns fans out there that say, “I could win 4 games coaching that team.” But the truth is, there are only a few coaches in the league that actually could win 4 games [through week 15] with this Cleveland Browns roster. Jeff Fisher, Andy Ried, Tom Coughlin, and Bill Belichick. Yeah, Bill Belichick, remember him? We’ll come back to him later.

The Basketball Jesus Rankings: Week 7

, Monday, December 15, 2008 at 12:30 PM Comments (0)

Basketball JesusThe top four appeared to be breaking away from the pack, but now it’s dwindled to the top 2. We are still Warrior-less, but now we have two new additions to the rankings. One could be a weekly contending to stay on the list if his game continues to develop. The other Could be a regular in the top-10 if he could stay healthy. If.
