Celtics fans plan boycott until Scalabrine returns

Nate Tharp, Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at 1:25 PM Comments (0)

Arai HelmetNot really. Celtics fans love Scal, but not that much, I think. But as any C’s fan knows, Scal has been playing out of his mind lately. And now we know why. As of Wednesday, Brian Scalabrine is out indefinitely after suffering two concussions in three days.

The first shot to the noggin was suffered in the second half of the Celtics’ blowout win in Dallas on Sunday. The second was suffered in Tuesday’s practice after the wirey Patrick O’Bryant gave Scal an inadvertent blow to the dome while going up for a rebound. Thin guys like O’Bryant are notorius for their sharp elbows, I know from personal experience.

Chinese basketball leagues can’t stand the heat, but aren’t ready to leave the kitchen

Yao Ming elbows Chris KamanIn an attempt to make the gameplay in Chinese basketball leagues more physical, the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) may be doing more harm than good to the sport in their country.

CBA chief Liu Xiaonong cited the Chinese national team’s poor performance in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as time when they realized their players needed to “strengthen their physical presence” if Chinese basketball players were going to be able to compete with the rest of the best of the world.

Arizona Cardinals Larry FitzgeraldIf you own a Terrible Towel, or you’re a resident of the Steel City, then you can stop reading here. But if your team already got booted from the NFL playoffs then read up. For the next two weeks your team should be the Cardinals and there’s plenty of reasons why.

Basketball Jesus The Celtics keep sliding in the standings, and so do their players in the Basketball Jesus Rankings. Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce have both dropped out of the rankings. But Dwyane Wade is holding on to a  62-point lead over LeBron James for the top spot.

Chris Webber answers Charles Barkleys Ginobili call

Nate Tharp, Sunday, January 18, 2009 at 2:00 PM Comments (0)

Sir Charles no longer has a monopoly on shouting the last names of players he admires. Chris Webber now has his own call, a shout-out for the Celtics point guard.

C-Webb has taken to shouting Rondoooooooooooooooo, to give props to one of the leagues young leaders (I just can’t bring myself to call anyone on that team other than KG, Jesus and The Truth a star).

Here’s one of Charles’ famous Ginobiliiiiiiii chants.

Another former Celtic returns to the bench

Nate Tharp, Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 9:10 PM Comments (0)

Kevin McHale coachingAs Randy Wittman has his tenure in Minnesota cut short, the Wolves vice president of basketball operations, Kevin McHale will be his replacement. This won’t be McHale’s first foray into NBA coaching, and he’s not the first former Celtic to sit on the bench in a suit (or turtleneck). So which one was the best?

The end of the B.C.S: Forcing an NCAA college football playoff

Nate Tharp, Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at 9:10 PM Comments (0)

I have a problem with congressional leaders and other politicians sticking their nose into sports. I hated the Mitchell Report, I hate all of the circus hearings that Congress holds on a wide range of topics that are none of their business and take their time away from more important issues. But Joe

Barton, a representative from Texas and the ranking Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee has put me in a tough spot, because I also hate the BCS. He has introduced a bill, which is co-sponsored by another Texas Republican and an Illinois Democrat, doesn’t seek to kill the BCS and force a playoff (which is what I’d ultimately like to see as the conclusion of the college football season) but instead, prohibit the BCS to market their final game as a “national championship.” Barton has cited the numerous years that the championship winner was not completely settled an the numerous failed attempts to improve the system as the reason for introducing this legislation.

The BCS method of determining who is No. 1 consistently misfires. Simply exposing the flaws and subjecting them to discussion … hasn’t led to improvement by those who run the system.

Something has to be done about the BCS. Every single year it takes way too much attention away from the teams, coaches, players and schools that really matter. There are only a handful of people that will seriously argue that the BCS is perfect or even a good thing. Most everyone falls into the categories of “this has got to go” or “this is the best we’ve got.”

So while I don’t like the politicians forcing the hand of the sports world, because Barton isn’t forcing the BCS to do anything, he’s merely protecting the consumer from the BCS’s false claims, I suppose I can overlook Congress’ proposed involvement in this issue.

Update: Rep. Barton compares the BCS to communism in congressional hearings.

Portland Trailblazer’s Management: Haters of the year in 2009

Nate Tharp, Friday, January 9, 2009 at 6:47 PM Comments (1)

Chapelle's Show - The Playa Hater's BallPortland, Portland, Portland. How could you be so callous and stupid?

2009 is going to be a tough year. The economy is in the shitter, and the road to recovery is going to be a looooong one. But we won’t get out of it alive with an “every man for themselves” mentality. We’ve gotta work together. That’s one of the reasons the Blazer’s threat to sue any team that purposefully tries to “adversely impact the Portland Trail Blazers Salary Cap and tax positions” by signing Darius Miles and playing him in two more games this season is so enraging.

The new (and improved?) ESPN.com

Nate Tharp, Monday, January 5, 2009 at 3:34 PM Comments (1)

ESPN.com home page

As expected, ESPN.com, the website of the worldwide leader in sports, launched a redesign today. ESPN has long been known for fantastic design for both their online properties as well as ESPN The Magazine. They’ve also proven themselves to be very forward-thinking and progressive when it comes to their online ventures. I’m not sure if this one makes the grade.
