Arizona DiamondbacksWith all the tragedy and turmoil in this crazy world, it warms the heart when you hear a story about something good every once in a while.

Rick Reilly has uncovered some of the good that the Arizona Diamondbacks are doing in their community. The D-Backs have recognized their place of prominence in the community and when they saw their community struggling, they have stepped up and taken action to ease the pain of some of their biggest fans.

This isn’t the first story we’ve heard about professional sports organizations stepping up to help their fan base. But it is an extaordinary and thoughtful gesture that they’re doing for these people and their families.

The D-Backs have created a scholarship of sorts, where individuals can apply, nominating a dedicated Diamondback fan in their lives that could use a little pick-me-up. Some fans have had unprobable streaks of bad luck. Some fans are just absolute die-hards that couldn’t afford the ticket prices. Some fans just live their lives they way they know they ought to, but never get the thanks and recognition they deserve.

As Riley points out, most of the recipients have no idea that they’ve been nominated, until they find out what they’ve won. That just makes the surprise and excitement even more amazing.
