Shaun Ellis’ $10,000 snowball

I don’t know if December 21st was officially the day that fun died in the NFL, but it was certainly the day the league got another reason for fans, writers and players to refer to it as the No Fun League. And no one has to pay more than Shaun Ellis. After a brutal 13-3 loss, in an ugly game, at a cold and snowy Qwest Field, filled with classless Seattle Seahawks fans, the New Jersey Jets players and coaches had to run a gauntlet of snowball-throwing fans to get to their locker rooms. I can understand why a player might be a little mentally unstable. And I don’t think I would’ve been able to resist the urge to drag a Seahawks fan out of his seat and down to field-level to give him the white-wash of his life.

Shaun Ellis, being a bigger and better man than I, resisted the urge and decided to have some fun. Or so he thought. As Ellis headed to the tunnel and got picked off by a few snowballs, he went and reached for the biggest and baddest snowball he could find. He then hoisted the monstrosity and returned fire into the stands, clearly surprising a few unsuspecting fans. Watch the video.

Of course, the NFL overreacted and fined Ellis $10,000 for the snowball. And I’d bet that $10,000 (which now belongs to the league) that not a single Seattle fan was arrested, fined, had their tickets revoked or even got a stern talking to from anyone representing the NFL or the Seahawks organization. So neither the NFL nor the home team could protect Ellis and his teammates. And then when Ellis protected himself (like any 10-year-old would), he got in trouble. At least there is some sanity in this world. I just can’t believe it came from Trent Dilfer.

“If you throw a snowball at me… I’m firing a bigger snowball and throwin it at you, and hopefully it’ll be the last throw. Cause once it hits you, it’ll be over.”

“The guy that throws the biggest snowball and throws it last, wins.”

-Trent Dilfer

If Ellis wasn’t such a nice guy, he’d sue Seattle and the NFL like any good American should.
