Well, well my Pats won the Super Bowl…now I could write pages upon pages stating that ‘I told you so’, or brag about the victory in endless paragraphs. But I will spare you all my jubilee and celebration and instead I wanted to share with you some experiences I have had living near the city.
The best way to travel in any city is a taxi cab, I am convinced of this. Not only do you not have the responsibility of finding a safe parking space, but you also do not need to choose a DD, so everyone can have fun (not that you can’t have fun without drinking, but well you can’t if you’re the only sober one). You also get the adventure of riding with a cab driver. Now most rides are fairly mild and straight business, but on occasion you get a cabbie with a personality, mix this with a non sober group of riders and well, you get some interesting cab rides.
One of my favorite, albeit not the safest trip came when I had a group of friends over my house. We were pre-gaming getting ready to go to D.C. for a night at the bars. As most recent college grads, we try and drink before going out, because it gets very expensive buying drinks at the bars. 3 cabs pulled up to my house all at once, and we were all excited to get to the bars as soon as possible. Maybe we were a little too excited, because as we jumped into the cabs, we soon made a simple trip to DC into a race. The best part was that all 3 taxi drivers were more then willing to participate. I found out later that everyone told their respective cabbie that if they got to the bar first, they’d give the driver a huge tip. Well it must have been a slow night for the taxi companies because as soon as the doors were shut and we told the drivers the destination, we took off! Zig-zagging and weaving in and out of traffic just to get ahead of the other cab. Windows down, fingers up and profanities yelled, the 3 cabs were flying through the city and onto the highway for a high-speed race. As we approached D.C. all the cabs split up to their respective “short cut”. Unfortunately my cab finished second, just behind the first cab. But I have never been more scared in my life on that trip. Being a little intoxicated, and flying through traffic and around corners, well you just don’t realize what you have been through till you are buying drinks for the winning passengers…still good times at the Cab Gran Prix.
Who ever knew that cab drivers were uber sensitive? I mean at 3am in the morning, stumbling out of a bar, your first and only concern is getting home. Well, you would expect taxi drivers are used to listening to drunken speech, slurred suggestions and comments, but not the one I had one night. Maybe he was new on the scene, or had a rough night, but as we piled into the cab, gave the destination and sat back, it was the quickest trip ever. Not 10 seconds into the cab my buddy in the backseat tells the cabbie that his cab “smells like sh**”. Well next thing I know we are flying across 3 lanes of traffic, and the cab stops, right next to the curb and we are yelled at and told to get out. We were trying to figure out why, but he opened his door got out and said he was not continuing, and we had to leave…who does that?! Atleast we didn’t have to pay for the two blocks he took us. I’m just thankful that my buddy didn’t make that comment on the highway, that would have been a pleasant walk home…
My third and final story is something out of a spring break trip to Jamaica or Cancun. On our way back from a night of bar hopping till last call we grab a cab and head back towards my house. The ride was going smoothly till the cabbie and my buddy in front (a sports god that will remain nameless) strike up a conversation which quickly somehow leads to everyone being offered some weed. If that was not enough, a pipe was passed around, we all nicely declined just wanting to get home safely. As a side note, apparently Egypt has the best marijuana if any of you are traveling in the near future and are into that sort of thing.
Well those are all the stories I have come across in the past few months, and I am sure they will not be the last. And now that the NBA and NHL have had their all star games, and MLB has had an interesting trade, I hope this article gives you something to carry over till I can react to the past week in sports.
